The Little Brown Church In The Vale

The window entitled "The Little Brown Church in the Vale" is located on the west side of the sanctuary. It was given by Bess Voorhies, a long-time member of our congregation, and her family in memory of Wilson A. Voorhies. It was dedicated in 1980.

The hymn this window was based on is "The Little Brown Church". The original little brown church is located in Nashua, IA. As the song says, "There's a church in the valley by the wildwood." In the window the little brown church is indeed located in a pastoral vale. The trees of the wildwood can be seen behind the church.  In the foreground are harbingers of a successful harvest time - the sheaves of wheat, a farm wagon, and a bountiful crop of pumpkins. Also included is a horse-and-rider fence. While most people assume this window depicts Half Moon Bay, it also represents Kansas where Mrs. Voorhies was raised and where fields of pumpkins are also grown.

A unique feature of "The Little Brown Church in the Vale" is the inclusion of several pieces of the blue glass originally found in the window.  Besides the trademark piece at the apex of the window, original glass can also be found in the area behind the wildwood.
