Larry Thomas grew up in Texas, the son of a Methodist pastor. Actually Larry is a fifth-generation Methodist pastor. When asked why he entered ministry, Larry says, “Besides the call of God, I think it’s probably chromosomal.”

Larry received his BA degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and his Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology at Claremont, California.

He served United Methodist churches in Sunnyvale, California, and San Jose, before coming to Half Moon Bay in 1988.

“The most important thing about ministry to me,” Larry says, “is being engaged with the real life struggles and the growing faith of people. What God is doing in people’s lives is endlessly fascinating, and it’s a privilege to be invited into people’s lives. I also think it’s important to try to understand our faith. I encourage people not to check their brains at the door when they come to church. But it’s the warm heart of faith and the courage to take one’s faith out into life that is finally most important.”

Larry is married to Mary Helen, a licensed marriage and family counselor. They have one daughter, Amanda, who is married and lives in Boston.
